Insect bites are not only unpleasant, they can be quite dangerous, when the injection site gets infected or a virus reaches the bloodstream. That's why it is very important to advise the patients about effective possibilities for protection.

To a certain extent, clothes will protect you from insects but there will always be some parts of the body that are uncovered. Only repellents can ensure total protection.

It is necessary though to cream your entire body evenly with a sufficient amount of the repellent – preferably combined with the appropriate clothing. The most effective repellents contain active substances such as Icaridin and Diethyltoluamid. Both rate as suitable for the tropics.

Natural insect repellents are not as effective even though many customers may prefer these. When consulting customers, PTA should also consider the user’s age and enquire about any allergies.

Questions

  • Which country do you want to visit?
  • Have you already made some good experiences with a particular insect repellent?
  • Do you need protection from insects for the whole family?
  • Do you or does a member of your family suffer from any allergies?
  • How old are your children?
  • Do you prefer a lotion or a spray?

Information

  • This preparation will repel ticks for up to six hours and mosquitoes up to eight hours.
  • This remedy contains Icaridin/Diethyltoluamid. It must not get in contact with mucous membrane. If it does, the affected areas will need to be washed off or rinsed thoroughly with water.
  • The repellent has to be applied several times a day – if you perspire a lot every four hours, moreover after each swim in the sea or in the pool.
  • Wash your hands after applying the repellent.
  • First apply the sunscreen and after 10 to 15 minutes the repellent, the latter only outdoors or in a well-ventilated room.
  • Side effects could be allergies or eye irritations.
  • In tropical countries you should additionally protect yourself by using mosquito nets and impregnated clothing. The repellent does not provide 100 % protection.

Additional information

  • You must not use a repellent on children under 1 year of age.
  • Icaridin can be used for children 2 years of age and over if applied sparingly and the areas around the eyes, mouth and nose are avoided.
  • Please ensure your child does not smudge the repellent.
  • Diethyltoluamid can be used for children 8 years of age and over.
  • If you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding, you must not use remedies containing Diethyltoluamid.
  • If you are using a spray, do not breathe in the spray mist. If you are using the spray in a room, leave the room straight after and ventilate it for at least 20 minutes.
